As you are reading this, you will probably get to read many other stuff over the Internet, and in some cases you might expose yourself to security threats as viruses, spywares / adwares, hacker attacks or ID thefts. In order to keep yourself protected you have to be careful first what websites you are visiting and what kind of personal details you are offering about you.
Even if you would use these top security softwares, they can’t protect you from what you are doing many times, so keep in mind some tips first:
- never give your personal information to anyone on the internet (there are many emails requesting you to give some personal details, or to change some of your details, but remember to double check what website you are reaching, as it might be a fake one)
- never visit a website asking your personal details or to change your details following a link in an email
- try to use the latest web browsers, updated and with the security options set to at least a medium level
- use an updated vesrion of antivirus, anti-spyware/adware, firewall and anti-phishing software
The software I have included here in Top 10 are all free for personal use (list is to be updated constantly):
- AVG - Antivirus
- ZoneAlarm - Firewall
- Avast! - Antivirus
- Ad-Aware - Anti-Spyware / Adware
- Spyware Terminator - Anti-Spyware
- Ewido - Anti-Spyware
- Comodo - Antivirus
- Comodo - AntiSpam
- Comodo VerificationEngine - Anti-Phishing
- Comodo - Firewall
My recommendation for you to keep safe when surfing online is to have one of these tools from each category installed and updated daily. For example you should use one antivirus, one anti-spyware / adware, one firewall, one anti-spam (for those using email clients) and one anti-phishing software. Using more than one from each category, like 2 antivirus applications will not improve your security, but it might create a breach as they will interfere and don’t get their job done properly.
I wish you safe surfing!
Note:
- antivirus - prevents infection of your system with computer viruses, trojans
- anti-spyware - prevents infection of your computer with applications that spy on you and send details to an outside computer
- anti-adaware - prevents infection with adware softwares that will analyze your behaviour and pop-up ads on your desktop
- firewall - prevents you being the victim of a hacker attack and sometimes from spywares, as it filters all outgoing and ingoing connections between your PC and the network you are connected to (ex Internet)
- anti-spam - prevents your email inbox being filled in with spam/bulk emails
- anti-phishing - prevents your ID theft by alerting you when visiting a website that is associated wit fraud or it is a fake/clone website
